| The first international conference was held in Buffalo, NY. The Buffalo conference brought together more than 200 women playwrights from over 30 countries around the world. | |
| 1989 | |
| International Center for Women Playwrights (ICWP) established in Buffalo, New York to continue the work of the conference and serve as a communications center for women playwrights internationally. | |
| 1991 | |
| 2nd International conference held in Toronto, Canada. International Advisory Committee (IAC) formed to choose the site of the next conference and to provide advice and assistance to its directors. | |
| 1994 | |
| Adelaide, Australia hosted the 3rd International conference and was by far the most successful in international attendance. | |
| 1997 | |
| Galway, Ireland hosted the 4th International Conference. Role of IAC extended to bring members into more active roles in planning and supporting the conference. An Organizational Committee with a core committee of 22 women volunteers from 10 countries; Australia, Egypt, England, France, Greece, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, Sweden, and the USA was formed to create a new organization before the 5th International conference in 2000. International Women Playwrights Centre closed its office in Buffalo and became a virtual centre, limiting its resources to women with Internet access only. | |

| Greece approved as the site of the 5th conference by the IAC Charter drafted for a new international women playwrights organization, Women Playwrights International. | |

| The 5th international conference held in Greece. Mexico chosen as the site for the 6th conference. | |

| The WPI Executive Committee in Mexico voted to cancel the conference in Mexico City. | |

| Philippines selected as the site for the 6th international conference by the Management Committee of WPI. | |

Theme: Cultural Liberty in a Diverse World
JAKARTA (NOVEMBER 19 - 24, 2006) » Indonesian National Gallery » Taman Ismail Marzuki Jakarta BALI (NOVEMBER 25 - 26, 2006) » Arma Gallery Ubud - Bali » Amphitheatre - Nusa Dua - Bali Jakarta, Indonesia was chosen to host the 7th International Conference in 2006 in part due to a strong lobby from Indonesia to attract a wider international participation to the conference. In the current volatile global situation, Indonesia was seen as a middle ground where East could meet West. PURPOSES • Enforce Indonesian Theatre in the arena of world theatre and to encourage the emergence of Indonesian women playwrights. • Fight for the rights and state of women playwrights in the midst of the general theatre development. • Promote a more in depth analysis and study of plays written by women. • Become a support network for women playwrights in facing censoring, political oppression, and various things that stand against the freedom of expression. AIMS • Strengthen and widen the network of women playwrights around the world. • Showcase contribution of women playwrights to the society. • Inspire and share with the world topics regarding women and their relationships with humanity, ethics, politics, and encouraging women to voice their thoughts. • Encourage intellectual and cultural relationships between countries all over the word, West - East, wealthy - poor, etc. • Diversify the participating playwrights, breaking down barriers, and bringing East and West closer together. |

| VIII International Women Playwrights Conference, MUMBAI, INDIA November 1st - 7th, 2009 Theme of VIII Conference - Liberty & Tolerance Sub Themes
Conference Aims To explore new emerging relationships between nation states, culture, races, languages, religion and faiths with special reference to liberty and tolerance. To explore the culture ties in the South Asian regions as expressed in story telling traditional dance and music opera and epics. To evolve a liberal platform for theoretical discussion and practical performances and writing. To create a platform for showcasing, reading, story telling for Indian Women playwrights. To explore the history of playwriting, directing, producing, and acting by women in India. To create spaces and opportunities for national and international networking and artistic exchange. To showcases and read plays written by women from all over the world with special reference to South Asia Pacific region. To discuss the theoretical and practical issues arising out of production, presentation, accessibility of theatres, finances and accessibility of Schools of drama to women aspirants. To explore the connectivity of play writing, screen play and film making. To make the conference accessible to a wide range of participants with an interest in theatre created by women. To create an accessible network for women playwrights, Story-tellers and folk artists for interaction, exchange and training. To encourage, facilitate research in dance drama and other artistic expressions by women.
